April Update

A few months ago, I got a little overzealous and tried to start a side blog called Revista da Cidade, after the magazine of the same name, showcasing Recife in the late 1920s. I was spending a few hours a week, for a few weeks, combing through each edition and posting every single image and story. What I should have done is just posted the most interesting bits here, from time to time…and that’s what I’ve decided to do.

The research site (Fundaj) that has the entire archive has been offline for the past week but I’ve found a workaround (Domínio Público). So, aside from the most recent post (Carnival kids) which comes from the pages of Revista da Cidade, I’ll be doing some other posts soon (maybe even today) using it as a source. In my view, it’s a great way to counter the influx of ‘recent news’ that I’ve grown accustomed to post here on a regular basis. In fact, I was looking at the most recent posts today and thinking I’ve been doing too many short, mostly positive ‘easy to publish’ stories when what I actually enjoy is something a little more alternative rather than just what’s popular or ‘of the moment’.
