On Wednesday, as a means of providing environmental education, Emlurb installed a measuring device that shows how much trash is made by the population in the central areas of Recife. The Lixômetro (Trash Meter) was placed on the corner of Rua Sete de Setembro and Ave. Conde da Boa Vista to teach the population about the importance of discarding trash the right way, and it will remain there until tomorrow.
All the trash picked up by Emlurb’s street-cleaning teams, in the area around Shopping Boa Vista and Rua da Aurora, as well as part of Rua Sete de Setembro, will be deposited in the device, which has capacity to hold up to 3,000 liters of trash and will allow for it to be viewable.
Next Monday and Tuesday, the Lixômetro will be at the Praça do Diário, and the trash picked up there and on the avenues of Guararapes and Dantas Barreto will be placed in the Trash Meter. These two places in the city center were chosen because they receive street cleaning seven to eight times per day.
The act includes the participation of three ‘art-educators’ who simulate a soccer game, giving warnings and cards to those who throw trash on the street. They will be near the Lixômetro from 9:30am to 1:30pm, and from 2:30pm to 6:30pm. – Source (PT)
