As can be read on my last post, Gilberto Freyre wrote Recife’s first tourism guide in 1934, which happens to be the very first guide for any Brazilian city ever. It’s called “Guia Prático, Histórico e Sentimental da Cidade do Recife” (Practical, Historical and Sentimental Guide to the City of Recife). It can be found in Brazilian bookstores and on Amazon (used, limited supply), though it’s not cheap. Five years after publishing the book, he published one on Olinda (called Olinda: 2º Guia Prático, Histórico e Sentimental de Cidade Brasileira).
Below is an excellent documentary (PT) based on the book! It’s full of people who love their city, as well as the sights and sounds that surround them daily. I’ll surely be watching it again and again.
