Searching Twitter for “Recife”

This is basically what happens when I search “Recife” for interesting news on Twitter. I get loads of spam. When checking a random 20-tweet cluster, what I get is the following:

  • 13 tweets saying the past or present location of people
  • 4 tweets saying what concerts people are going to or have been to
  • 2 tweets reporting traffic problems
  • 1 tweet about someone’s Brazil trip

I know this isn’t specific to Recife but I’m pretty sure it happens more in smaller cities. It’d be great if Twitter could allow people to filter this kind of stuff out cause, at the moment, searching Twitter is like going fishing. And why people care about telling strangers where they are, I’ve got no clue (perhaps they just want to feel “included”).

Tip: If you want to skip the Foursquare spam (the majority), do a search like this “recife -4sq.com” (without the quotes) but be aware that it seems to only filter it out for the first few dozen tweets.
