4G Internet tested in Recife

url

G1 Pernambuco tested 4G internet in Recife, via chips provided by Claro. The results were satisfactory and the tests were run in 3 touristic locations, including Avenida Boa Viagem (in the neighborhood of the same name), at Marco Zero (in Recife Antigo) and at the Gilberto Freyre International Airport (in Imbiribeira, not far from Boa Viagem). At the same locations, 3G internet was also tested for comparison, though unfortunately it mostly failed or took too long, overall.

The tests included posting images to Facebook, loading a one-minute video to Youtube, downloading a 164 mb game from Google Play and sending an email with a photo attached. The game and the video were the weak points for 3G and the video upload was a weak point for the 4G connection.

The Arena Pernambuco, which will host the Confederations Cup 2013 in the coming months and the World Cup next year, was tested as well, but was found to have no 4G connection.

The Jornal de Commercio did their own 4G tests, using some of the locations G1 used but also testing others.

The Electric Buses of Recife

tb06

The electric buses of Recife started to circulate in June of 1960, with a fleet of 65 buses imported from the US. The trolleybuses (“trólebus”), as they were known, served 13 neighborhoods (map), such as Beberibe, Engenho do Mato, San Martin and Tejipió. By 1963, more than 130 trolleybuses crisscrossed the city.

Starting in the 80s, the electric buses began breaking down. There were maintenance problems, a lack of sufficient electric energy and the service just became completely deteriorated, giving way to diesel-run buses. The entire system was actually closed for a brief time, until another company gave it another chance.

For many that regularly took the trolleybuses, though, it was a pleasure to ride, it was safe and even a bit romantic at night, but with the passing of time they began to fall apart. The “banana” (the rod that connected the bus to the electric network) would fall and the driver would have to stop the bus to put it back in its place.

Despite the problems and the dwindling fleet over the years, around 30 trolleybuses were kept running until 2001, when the electric bus system was terminated. The main issue over the years was that, coming from abroad, the trolleybuses were hard to fix and when they’d break down while in service, it’d create traffic jams.

Regardless, foreign studies currently show that electric buses are best suited for big cities. They’re lighter than the metro and don’t pollute the air. Many other countries maintain this type of transportation and even more are testing out new ways of utilizing it. – Source (PT)

Less visual pollution starting June 1st

5c710643477cd6b347c0cb98b91b94b8

“The owners of venues and those that produce festivals who use the fixed posters on walls known as “lambe-lambes”, to publicize their events, will be fined R$5,400 starting from the 1st of June. The fine will be applied individually to each poster found. Those who renege would have their shows prohibited by the city. The Department of Urban Mobility and Control of Recife met yesterday afternoon with 29 entrepreneurs from city events to discuss the matter.

At the meeting, which took place in Recife City Hall, the Municipal Law 17.521/08 was presented, which prohibits the installation of ads on roads, parks, plazas, public parks, streetlights, bridges, walkways, bridges, tunnels, trees, buildings and public sidewalks. The city made a study which found that about 50 venues and producers use advertising to promote their events. All were invited to the meeting and will receive a document from the city informing them of their decisions.

“The lambe-lambes will be extinct in Recife. The law already exists, we are just applying it, “said Secretary of Urban Mobility and Control, João Braga. The way the inspection will be done is still being discussed. “We had meetings with the Departments of Finance and Legal Affairs to figure out enforcement,” he added.” – Source (PT)

In late March, the one-Sunday per month pilot program for “Recife Antigo de Coração” was launched to great success. After biking on the ciclofaixa, the Recife residents went to the downtown area to check out the festivities. The mayor’s office transformed the beloved neighborhood of Recife Antigo into a large urban park, with cultural and sportive presentations, etc. The closing of the neighborhood to cars was approved by its residents. The mayor Gerald Julio and the governor Eduardo Campos rode 13 km by bike in the morning and returned to Marco Zero with their families in the afternoon to watch the presentation of the Meninos do Monte do Bom Jesus Orquestra, hailing from Caruaru.

This past April 28th was the second edition of the new monthly event.
