A year and a half ago, the government put out this projection of what ‘Old Recife’ will look like, presumably by the World Cup 2014. Often with such projects, they take away the ability to do what one pleases (ie, sell their wares), and ultimately the culture (do cultural manifestations require a permit?), from the space and create an area for rich people to enjoy themselves. Judging by the animation, this looks to be the case. Such a project “makes sense” when coupled with various efforts, as far back as the early 90′s, to gentrify Old Recife.
